Who are apprentices and trainees?
An apprentice or trainee is a person employed under a training agreement. Apprenticeships and traineeships provide a combination of employment and structured training. An apprentice or trainee is contracted to an employer for a nominal period of time, enabling them to successfully gain competence in a trade (apprenticeship) or vocational area (traineeship).
- Apprenticeships are long term contracts of 3 - 5 years, in trades such as auto mechanics, hairdressing or electrical trades.
- Traineeships are shorter term, 6 - 12 months, and encompass training in a wider variety of skills, including business, community service or hospitality and tourism areas.
