Learn hospitality skills that travel well

If you're a people person and love work that keeps you on your toes then a career in hospitality could be for you. This program is an excellent entry pathway to a rewarding career in a, hotel, restaurant, nightclub or other vibrant hospitality fields. Whether you're planning to work here in Australia or overseas this program will give you the skills to be a confident industry professional.

This course will give you the competitive edge as you learn how to operate a bar, provide responsible service of alcohol, deliver a variety of food serve styles and make that delicious cappuccinos and hot chocolates. Our highly qualified trainers have decades of hospitality relevant experience and ready to share their passion for the industry in a fun and supporting environment. On graduating you’ll have the skills and knowledge to gain work as a waitperson, barista or bartender in a wide range of food and beverage operations.

Students who complete the Certificate III in Hospitality may continue to study the SIT50416 Diploma of Hospitality Management (CRICOS 091002M). Course details

Entry requirements

International Student specific entry requirements:
: For students whose first language is not English, the required minimum English language levels is IELTS 5.5 with no individual score less than 5.0 or equivalent assessment.  More information on English entry requirements can be found on our website.

Academic: The minimum requirements can be one of the following:

  • Certificate II or III - 10 years of schooling (or equivalent)
  • Certificate IV or Diploma - 12 years of schooling (or equivalent)
  • Mature-aged entry with work experience in a related field

Please send certified and translated copies of your English results and academic certificates to the International Student Unit together with your completed and signed application form.

Resources required

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.You must abide by industry and/or TAFE Queensland North dress standards.

Uniforms are to be worn at all times during practical services/functions, plus during any/all excursions. This ensures that our students are recognised by Industry as highly employable graduates with impeccable standards of presentation and dress. The uniform requirements are to be provided by students at their own cost and are as follows:

Cairns campus:

  1. Long sleeved black business shirt
  2. Long black dress pants
  3. Black socks
  4. Fully enclosed leather dress shoes with non-slip soles

Cannonvale (Whitsundays) campus:

  1. Long sleeved charcoal dress shirt with TAFE QLD North student logo embridered

Townsville (Pimlico) campus:

These purchases of the above items should only be made after teacher consultation at induction. 

Resources included in the tuition fees are student orientation handbook and relevant learning materials such as study guides, assessment requirements, handouts and workbooks. Students have access to library resources, computers, the Internet and a personal email account at TAFE Queensland North.


Cairns Campus:
Full time over one semester, attending four days per week from 9.00am to 4.00pm (Monday to Thursday)
Friday is an optional service day at our Tropics Training Coffee Shop or Restaurant Service

Cannonvale (Whitsundays) campus:
Full time over one semester, attending three days per week from 9.00am to 4.00pm (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)
Tuesday is an independent study day.  
Restaurant dinner service once a month on a Thursday is also a requirement of the Program 

Townsville (Pimlico) Campus:
Full time over one semester, attending three days per week (Monday, Tuesday and Friday 9.00am to 3.30pm)


Cairns, Cannonvale (Whitsundays) and Townsville (Pimlico) Campuses have a campus-based restaurant and cafe and it is a requirement that students complete 36 services for this program.  This may include options on industry events or industry placement. Students must complete a log book for each of the 36 services (which are included as part of the 4 days of study).  The services are across industry hours which could include the occasional evening or weekend..

Important Information

Please note that due to the nature of the hospitality industry, other functions could be conducted on various days, where you will be required to attend.  Also please note that students may be required to attend evening classes for specific electives.


To achieve the Certificate III in Hospitality,  students need to successfully complete 15 units (7 core units and 8 elective units)

SIT30616 Certificate III in Hospitality.  This qualification provides the skills to work in settings such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, bars, cafes and coffee shops.


University pathways
If you want to go on to further study at university, TAFE Queensland has a pathway option to get you there. The SIT30616 Certificate III in Hospitality could be the first step on this journey and will provide credit toward the SIT50416 Diploma of Hospitality Management.

Completing one of our diplomas will give you a full year of credit towards a degree with one of our partner universities. That means cutting down the amount of time you need to complete your degree, or even enrolling straight into the second year of your university course.
